about this event
Canadian guitarist and composer Jesse Cook is one of the most influential figures in nuevo flamenco music, fusing elements of flamenco rumba, jazz, classical, gypsy, and world music.
Born in Paris, Cook’s early years were spent in both France and Spain, where he became interested in flamenco music. After moving to his parents’ native Canada, the young guitarist studied at Eli Kassner Guitar Academy, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and York University, all in Toronto, before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston.
His debut album, Tempest, was released in 1995, and he has since recorded nine other studio albums, including his newest, Beyond Borders (2017). His fourth album, Free Fall, won a 2001 JUNO Awards for Best Instrumental Album. In 2009, he was the silver winner in the flamenco category in Acoustic Guitar Player’s Choice Awards. And he’s a three-time winner of the Canadian Smooth Jazz award for Guitarist of the Year. Earlier this year PBS premiered Beyond Borders, Cook’s latest concert film special, which was directed and edited by the guitarist.
