about this event
Detour Company Theatre presents Disney’s Newsies. Based on the 1992 film Newsies—which was inspired by the historical Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City—the stage version features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and Jack Feldman with a book by four-time Tony® winner Harvey Fierstein. Newsies addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as young people learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment. The musical introduces new music while retaining many of the beloved songs from the film, including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”
Detour Company Theatre offers theatre training and performance experiences for adults with cognitive and physical disabilities, providing them authentic opportunities to develop artistry, demonstrate courage and collaboration, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of musical theatre with the entire community. As the Center’s resident theater troupe, Detour returns to present its annual spring show, under the direction of its founder and artistic director, Sam.
