Tuesday, Jan. 28, Program Details: Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Violin no. 4, 5, 9

For more than 40 years, four-time Grammy Award® -winning violinist and musical phenomenon Anne-Sophie Mutter has been a fixture on the world’s most prestigious stages. Scottsdale Arts is honored to add the Virginia G. Piper stage to Mutter’s list during this one-night-only engagement with pianist Lambert Orkis.  

In a highlight performance of 2019, Mutter teamed up with Daniel Barenboim and Yo-Yo Ma to perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. In addition to classical pieces in the violin repertoire, Mutter is equally committed to the future growth of the canon and has performed the world premiere performances of nearly 30 works and for such legendary composers as Sir Andre Previn and John Williams.  

Joining Mutter on stage during the January 28 performance is pianist Lambery Orkis. For 30 years, the celebrated duo has appeared to capacity audiences in the finest performance venues. The duo’s many recordings and DVDs for Deutsche Grammophon include sonata cycles by Mozart (Choc de l’année Award), Beethoven (Grammy Award®), and Brahms. Recent releases include The Silver Album celebrating 25 years of their artistic partnership, The Club Album issued in both CD and video formats, and a performance of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano in commemoration of the composer’s 85th birthday. 

Orkis’s substantial career includes more than eleven years of concertizing with cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. He has premiered and recorded compositions by numerous composers for Bridge Records, including solo works written for him by George Crumb, Richard Wernick, and James Primosch. Additionally, he holds the positions of Principal Keyboard of the National Symphony Orchestra and Professor of Piano at Temple University in Philadelphia.
