about this event

Cellist Alisa Weilerstein, a 2011 recipient of the MacArthur “genius grant,” and piano virtuoso Inon Barnatan come together for a poetic rendering of classical music, fresh from their respective performances with the Los Angeles, New York, and London philharmonic orchestras.

Weilerstein recently released Transfigured Night, a recording of Haydn’s First and Second Cello Concertos, and Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht,” from which the album takes its title. She has released four studio albums, was featured on the soundtrack of 2014’s If I Stay (a feature film starring Chloë Grace Moretz), and has performed at the Saint-Denis Festival in Paris, Cincinnati Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, and Toronto Symphony, among others. Weilerstein is also a champion of new music, most recently performing the word premiere of Outscape for the Chicago Symphony.

Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most admired pianists of his generation,” Barnatan was the recipient of both a prestigious 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center’s 2015 Martin E. Segal Award, which recognizes young artists of exceptional talent. In addition to maintaining a performance schedule that recently included the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Chicago, Baltimore, and Seattle Symphonies, Barnatan is the music director of the La Jolla Music Society Summerfest.
