about this event

Don’t miss this duet with two of the most creative guitarists in jazz.

Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings. His catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.” Chicago Reader said Music IS—the guitarist’s latest album for OKeh/Sony—“beautifully encapsulates Frisell’s depth and range in all its meditative glory.” His previous project, the Grammy Award®-nominated When You Wish Upon a Star, germinated at Lincoln Center during his two-year appointment as guest curator for the Roots of Americana series (September 2013 – May 2015). Frisell was also the subject of a documentary film by director Emma Franz, Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth.

“Long hailed as one of the most distinctive and original improvising guitarists of our time.” — The New York Times

Grammy Award®– nominated guitarist Julian Lage has been praised as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation. He has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association, and a spirit of infinite possibility. Lage has worked alongside many musicians, such as Gary Burton, John Zorn, Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge, and Fred Hersch, to name a few. His latest album Love Hurts—with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King of The Bad Plus—explores the American song catalog from a truly unique vantage point, performing music written by a range of audacious and original artists, from Roy Orbison to Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Giuffre to Peter Ivers.
